SWAT, 2 August: Swat Police have foiled a bid of giving a 14-years-old girl in Swara in Madian area and arrested eight people, including jirga members, involved in the practice.
Police said rumours of illicit relations of Muzamil Shah, who is father of eight children, with a 17-years-old girl Noreena spread four months ago. After surfacing of the scandal, a local jirga gave Zabeeha, 14-years-old daughter of Muzammil, as Swara to Ajab Khan, ex- fiancé of Noreena, to settle the dispute. Zabeeha and Ajab Khan were married off on 30 July.
The compromise marriage of Muzamil and Noreena was underway on Saturday, when the police on a tip off raided the venue and stopped the marriage.
Station House Officer (SHO) Madian Police Station Muhammad Ali said the police raided Shagram Derai village and recovered the girl to be given as Swara.
“The girl was sent to the house of bridegroom and the dinner programme for the guests was underway when we raided their house and recovered the girl. We have also arrested the bridegroom, his father and members of the jirga who were involved in the whole episode,” the police officer told TNN.
Mr Ali said Swara or giving girl in marriage to a rival group as compensation to settle dispute is a crime under Pakistani laws. He said eight people involved in the matter have been arrested and search for two others is underway. He said the arrested accused will be presented in the court.
