Aman Lakhkar

KHAR, July 23: Salarzai tribe of Bajaur Agency has decided to form a Lashkar (militia) comprising 1,000 individuals to promote peace and support security forces against cross-border incursions from Afghanistan.

On 22 July, tribal elders and members of a local committee took the decision during a Jirga in Khar, the agency headquarters.

Sector Commander North Brigadier Haider, Bajaur Political Agent Sayyed Abdul Jabbar Shah and other administrative officers attended the Jirga.

Elders of Salarzai tribe said the Lakhkar would guard their areas, including Chinar, Banda, Dara, and Mulla Syed, against militants.

The Lashkar volunteers will also set up a checkpost in border areas and will observe the activities of suspicious people. The Jirga elders decided that if someone sheltered miscreants, their home would be demolished and their entire family would be exiled.

Jirgas are of paramount importance in the Pakhtun and tribal culture. Jirga means assembly of elders for solution to problems and resolution of disputes.
