Major Syed Moiz Abbas Shah, the Pakistan Army officer who captured Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan alive in 2019, was martyred during an intelligence-based operation against militants in South Waziristan, the military’s media wing (ISPR) confirmed.

According to ISPR, security forces launched the operation in the Sararogha area, targeting a hideout of militants declared by the state as "Khawarij" believed to be backed by India. Eleven militants were killed and seven others injured in the intense exchange of fire.

Major Moiz Abbas Shah, 37, who was leading the operation, and Lance Naik Jabran Ullah, 27, embraced martyrdom during the clash. Major Moiz hailed from Chakwal, while Jabran Ullah was a resident of Bannu.

Major Moiz was known for his bravery and played a key role in several operations against militants. He gained national recognition for capturing Indian pilot Abhinandan on February 27, 2019, after Pakistan shot down two Indian fighter jets that had violated Pakistani airspace.

Recalling the incident during a TV interview a year later, Major Moiz shared that he and his team found Abhinandan surrounded by angry civilians after his aircraft crashed. On seeing the Pakistani uniforms, the Indian pilot surrendered and asked for protection.

jMajor Moiz ensured his safety, provided him medical assistance, and took him into custody. Abhinandan was later handed over to India at the Wagah Border as a goodwill gesture by the Pakistani government.
