The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has published a report on the ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan.

According to UNESCO, nearly 2.4 million girls have been deprived of secondary education since the Taliban returned to power. The number of Afghan girls denied access to secondary education has increased by 200,000 compared with last year.

The UNESCO report said that if the ban remains in place, the number of girls deprived of education could reach 4 million by 2030. It stressed that Afghan girls and women have the right to education and that education is a fundamental human right.

According to UNESCO, the ban on girls’ education is also having serious consequences for Afghanistan’s economy. More than 90% of 10-year-old children in Afghanistan are unable to read a simple text.

UNESCO has called for the immediate restoration of the right to education for girls in Afghanistan and condemned discrimination against Afghan women and girls.

According to the news agency, Afghan girls were barred from attending secondary schools in March 2022. Universities were also closed to female students later in 2022.
