BATTAGRAM, June 10: The District Coordination Council of Battagram has asked the government to hand the electricity production projects over to local social welfare organisations instead of NGOs.
A meeting held on 9 June appreciated the small dams projects for electricity production but said that in the past such projects had failed due to poor performance of NGOs.
The council warned that if the new projects were assigned to NGOs instead of local social welfare organisations, they would stage protests and would not allow them to work in the area.
A local resident, who attended the council meeting, told TNN, “We don’t want to see foreign NGOs take control of these projects as these are part of our culture. Local people will get employment opportunities if these projects were given to local organisations. Moreover, many foreign NGOs left such projects incomplete here; so if these projects were given to local social welfare organisations, they would implement them properly.”
