In our society, transgender individuals are often looked at with curiosity, judgment, or even disdain. While they are seen spreading joy, their hearts often carry an ocean of pain and despair that most of us cannot even fathom. Their smiles frequently serve as a mask to conceal the turmoil within.
About three weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet a transgender person at a workshop. There was something incredibly captivating about their innocence and maturity. Belonging to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, this individual was well-educated and engaged in a respectable profession. As I spoke to them, it seemed as if they were among the happiest people in the world.
Two days ago, I received a call from them while I was busy. I quickly sent a message saying I would call back later. The next morning, sitting in my office, I suddenly recalled that I had forgotten to return the call. Perhaps it was important. When I finally called, they answered with a cheerful tone, narrating their success stories and speaking of their work with enthusiasm.

Their business was going well, they said. But amidst the laughter, they casually asked, "Misbah, is there an easy way to end one’s life?"
I froze. For a moment, I couldn't find the words to respond. Gathering my thoughts, I finally said, "Life is beautiful, and your life is even more precious than ours. You should pray for life, not think of ending it."
What they said next compelled me to write this blog. Their voice broke as they replied, "You have no idea about the reality of our lives." And then they started sobbing uncontrollably. I kept saying, "Hello, hello!" but they could only manage to say, "Misbah, I'll talk to you later."
This conversation left me shaken.
We, as a society, often treat transgender individuals with cold indifference, failing to acknowledge them as fellow human beings with emotions, dreams, and struggles. We see them laughing, dancing, and appearing cheerful, but behind those smiles lies deep loneliness and unbearable sorrow. The burden of societal rejection, discrimination, and isolation weighs heavily on them, making even the strongest among them falter.
Transgender individuals are as much a part of this world as anyone else. They, too, seek love, acceptance, and happiness. Instead of ignoring them or treating them as outsiders, we should strive to understand their emotions and stand beside them in solidarity. It is high time we change our attitudes and embrace them with kindness, empathy, and respect.
Remember, every person faces hardships. We must learn to look beyond a smile and recognize the hidden pain. If we all make a little effort to be more understanding, we can create a society filled with love, acceptance, and humanity.
