PESHAWAR: A close relative of Farishta Mohmand, a 10-year-old girl hailing from Mohmand tribal district who was killed after alleged sexual abuse in Islamabad, has been arrested by Islamabad Police on suspicion of involvement in the murder.
According to police, the arrested person is a close relative of Farishta Mohmand and he has been arrested after interrogation from the earlier arrested suspects. Police have not disclosed the identity of the arrested suspect, however, the scope of investigations has been widened.
The body of 10-year-old Farishta, a student of grade-2, originally hailing from Mohmand district and living in Shahzad Town, Islamabad, was found two days ago in a forest. The body was shifted to Polyclinic for post mortem.
The girl went missing on May 15 and police took four days to file the First Information Report (FIR). The relatives of the girl say police avoided filing the report for five days on assumption that the girl might have left her house according to her own will. The family members and residents of the area placed the body of the girl at Tramri Chowk and staged protest against the alleged murder of the girl after sexual abuse and indifferent attitude of police. They ended their protest after the authorities assured them that a case would be filed against station house officer (SHO) and other officials of Shahzad Town Police Station for negligence.
Sources said Gul Nabi, the father of Farishta, was invited for talks by the prime minister’s adviser Ali Nawaz at the office of Assistant Commissioner Faisal Saleem on Tuesday night. The administration assured Gul Nabi that the SHO will be arrested, while inquiry will also be held against the administration of Polyclinic. He was assured that the case would be resolved within 40 days. An assurance was also made about compensation to the bereaved family. The Islamabad commissioner will send a summary in this regard to Prime Minister Imran khan.
On Tuesday, protests were held in Peshawar and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and rest of the country against the murder of Farishta Mohmand and demand was made to provide speedy justice to her family.
