PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has set up a reconciliation committee to resolve disputes over mineral resources in merged tribal districts.

This was revealed by KP Chief Minister’s Special Assistant on Minerals Arif Ahmadzai while addressing a press conference along with Special Assistant on Information Kamran Bangash on Tuesday. Arif Ahmadzai said the dispute resolution committee is mandated to consult all the stakeholders to resolve issues between leaseholders and local tribes.

The special assistant said that 66 new vacancies have been created in the Mineral Department for merged districts. He said a joint venture of public-private partnership has been introduced for mining and mineral exploration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the joint venture will attract investment and create more employment opportunities for the youth.

Arif Ahmadzai said that as part of the reforms process in Minerals Department, the KP government has banned the use of explosives in marble and granite deposits.

Mr Ahmadzai said measures have been taken for exploration of mineral resources in merged districts and a reconciliation committee has been constituted to resolve issues in this regard.

The special assistant said 50 amendments have been made to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Mines and Minerals Act 2017 to generate more revenue for the Minerals Department and development of minerals sector on fast track basis. He said the government was taking steps for gaining maximum benefit from mineral resources of merged districts.

He said Illegal Mining Control Act had been drafted and several other initiatives have also been taken during the last two years to discourage illegal mining. He said training is also being imparted to mining labourers to ensure their safety.

Arif Ahmadzai said that Minerals Department has a lot of potential in terms of increasing revenue and reducing unemployment. He said the Minerals Department has generated Rs3.38 billion revenue in 2019-20 with 55 percent increase in comparison with last year.

Kamran Bangash said that under the leadership of Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, KP is making swift development. He said reforms have been introduced in every department to improve its performance. He said the fruits of the reforms are quite visible and more reforms are underway for further improvement.
