Islamabad: The Digital Media Alliance of Pakistan (DigiMAP) has strongly condemned the federal government's recent notification restricting the movement of foreign journalists and Pakistani journalists affiliated with international media organizations to various parts of the country without prior permission.

In a joint statement, DigiMAP President Sabookh Syed and Secretary General Adnan Amir described the notification as a serious setback to press freedom, transparency, and Pakistan's democratic values. They stated that the restrictions create unnecessary barriers for journalists performing their professional responsibilities and undermine the constitutional principle of freedom of expression.

The DigiMAP leadership observed that the notification not only limits the movement of foreign correspondents beyond designated cities but also places similar restrictions on Pakistani journalists working for international media organizations. Such measures make independent reporting from different regions of Pakistan virtually impossible.

"Journalists cannot effectively perform their professional duties if they are prevented from accessing areas where important developments take place," the statement said. “Restricting media access damages public trust, discourages transparent reporting, and sends an unfortunate message to the international community.”

DigiMAP further noted that Pakistan already faces significant international scrutiny regarding media freedom. Instead of creating additional restrictions, the government should facilitate responsible journalism and demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles, transparency, and accountability.

The organization also expressed concern that the notification could adversely affect the livelihoods of Pakistani journalists employed by international media outlets. If they are unable to report freely from different parts of the country, they may face professional and financial consequences, placing their careers at serious risk.

DigiMAP urged the federal government to immediately withdraw the notification and initiate meaningful consultations with media representative bodies before introducing any policy that affects journalistic work.

"The free flow of information is a cornerstone of every democratic society. Pakistan's image will be strengthened not by restricting journalists, but by ensuring openness, transparency, and respect for media freedom," the statement concluded.

DigiMAP reaffirmed its commitment to defending press freedom and warned that if the notification is not withdrawn, the organization will consult with media stakeholders and consider all democratic and legal options, including peaceful advocacy and protest, to protect the rights of journalists.
