The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for eight districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid rising temperatures and recent rainfall.

According to the PDMA, the alert covers Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Bahrain (Swat), Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra.

The authority warned that accelerated glacier melting, combined with recent rains, could significantly increase water levels in rivers and streams, raising the risk of flash floods in vulnerable areas, particularly in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kohistan.

PDMA has directed the relevant deputy commissioners to closely monitor vulnerable locations, ensure timely early warnings, and take all necessary precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.

The authority also instructed district administrations in Upper and Lower Kohistan, Mansehra, and Swat to ensure the availability of rescue personnel, emergency equipment, and relief resources. It further advised that evacuation plans be kept ready in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Bahrain (Swat), Kohistan, and Mansehra in case of any emergency.

The PDMA urged tourists to avoid camping and trekking in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kohistan until weather conditions improve.

The public has been advised to stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams, and flood channels and to follow official advisories to avoid any loss of life or property.
