PESHAWAR, May 11: A suicide bomb attack left five people dead and 10 injured in the provincial capital Peshawar.
The police say the bomber detonated explosives around his vest at the Tehmas Football Stadium where registration of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Tirah valley of Khyber Agency was in progress.
Hundreds of families have been displaced from the tribal areas because of military operations against the Taliban. These families are given food ration and a small cash amount after their registration at various camps.
On 11 May, the bomber arrived at the camp in guise of an IDP and opened fire on the security personnel. Later, he blew himself up.
The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations, Najeeb-ur-Rehman, said that 10kg explosive material was used in the blast. The injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital, the biggest health facility of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
Reports in the Pakistani media also said the suicide bomber seemed to be in early 20s.
The blast was the first suicide attack during the last three months. Nine people had been killed and several wounded in an attack in Koocha Risaldar in the first week of February.
Also, the blast was fifth in Peshawar during the last four days. The first bomb went off in Meena Bazaar, while another exploded in the Khyber Super Market on Bara Road on Friday. On Saturday, nine people were wounded in a blast in Kohati Gate locality while three were wounded in another explosion on Dilazak Road.
The frequent explosions have set the alarm bells ringing in the provincial capital that had been witnessing a relatively peaceful time for the last several weeks.
