The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecast another spell of monsoon rains across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from July 29 to August 5 and directed all district administrations to take precautionary measures to minimise the risk of weather-related emergencies.

According to the PDMA, monsoon currents will begin affecting the upper and central parts of the province from July 29, while a western weather system is also expected to intensify from August 1, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall.

The authority warned of possible landslides in the upper districts, including Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra and Kohistan. It also cautioned that local streams and hill torrents in these areas could experience flash flooding.

In the central and plain districts, including Swat, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera, the PDMA warned of the risk of urban flooding due to heavy rainfall.

The authority further said that strong winds and intense rain could damage weak structures, electricity poles and billboards, urging district administrations to ensure preventive measures in vulnerable and high-risk areas.

Relevant departments have been instructed to maintain continuous monitoring of rivers, streams and seasonal waterways, while rescue personnel and emergency equipment should remain on standby in flood, flash flood and landslide-prone districts.

The PDMA also advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel during the adverse weather conditions, maintain a safe distance of at least 20 feet from rivers and streams, and refrain from entering floodwaters. It further urged visitors to avoid trekking, hiking and camping in mountainous areas during periods of heavy rainfall.

The PDMA said its Emergency Operations Centre is fully operational and urged the public to contact its toll-free helpline 1700 in case of any emergency.
