JAMRUD, November 17: The tournament of an indigenous sport, gilli danda, has started in Jamrud tehsil of Khyber Agency for the very first time. Around eight teams from all over the region are participating in the event.
Gilli Danda is played with two sticks. One stick is large and called Danda, which is used to hit a smaller one, called Gilli.
TNN correspondent says the tournament has been arranged to revive the local game in the area, as people do take more interest in such kind of games.
Mr Aman Khan, a player of the Super Don team told TNN that on one hand the players enjoyed the game, while on the other the spectators seemed to take more interest in the game.
“This is an ancient game. We participate in it so that this game also remains alive like the other sports such as cricket, volleyball, etc. This sport does not require much expense. All we have to do is to cut off a branch from a tree and we make sticks out of it. This game should be given due recognition on national level so that it may gain more popularity,” he added.
The FATA Olympic Association is going to arrange a tournament of another rural game, named “chindro” or “stapoo” or “kidi kada” in December.
