PESHAWAR, May 8: The International Thalassemia Day is being observed today.

The Hamza Foundation, a social welfare organisation based in provincial capital Peshawar and treating thalassemia patients, held a walk and a ceremony in connection with the Thalassemia Day.

A large number of thalassemia affected children and their parents participated in the walk.

Chairman of the Hamza Foundation, Dr Aijaz Ali Khan, says approximately 10 million children are suffering from thalassemia in Pakistan and of the victims 20,000 belong to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr Aijaz added, “About 5,000 to 8,000 children become victims of the disease every year in Pakistan. Unfortunately, the number of patients of the disease is more in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”
