KHYBER: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has taken a significant step towards making the province drug-free by deciding to establish a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts in Khyber district.

The initiative is being undertaken under the “Drug-Free Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” programme launched by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi. A special programme aimed at the treatment, rehabilitation and social reintegration of drug addicts was held at the chief minister’s hujra in Khyber.

Chief Minister’s brother Naveed Afridi, MNA Haji Muhammad Iqbal Afridi, MPA and Chairman District Development Advisory Committee (DEDAC) Abdul Ghani Afridi, Commissioner Peshawar, Deputy Commissioner Khyber, DPO Khyber, Director Social Welfare and other district officials and relevant authorities attended the programme.

Under the initiative, a dedicated rehabilitation centre will be established in Khyber district where deserving drug addicts will receive free treatment, counselling and rehabilitation services. The provincial government will bear the expenses of their treatment and rehabilitation.

Participants said the initiative goes beyond treating individuals and represents a practical effort to protect the wider community from the harmful effects of drug abuse. They stressed that people struggling with addiction should be provided treatment, support and an opportunity to return to society rather than being subjected to hatred or punishment alone.

Local residents welcomed the initiative and expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, MPA Abdul Ghani Afridi and MNA Iqbal Afridi for taking what they described as a humanitarian and welfare-oriented step.

They expressed hope that the programme would help protect Khyber’s youth from drug abuse, give affected individuals a chance at a new life and contribute to building a healthier, peaceful and drug-free society.
