moharram security

PESHAWAR, October 20: The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to seal the city from 8th of Muharramul Haram onwards to maintain law and order.

As per the security plan, out of the total 65 imambargahs, 30 have been declared sensitive and 13 to be on higher security risk.

Of 112 processions, 32 cortèges are prone to attacks because those are to traverse 12 sensitive places, for which strict measures have been taken.

The authorities have banned the entry of all kinds of transport in the city from 8th of Muharram. According to the security plan, distribution of khairat (charity) would not be allowed without schedule and unnecessary mourning processions, addresses and other such activities have also been banned.

The administration says members from the district administration, security forces, assistant commissioners, additional assistant commissioners and local peace committees would also accompany the processions.

The areas declared sensitive in Moharramul Haraam are often prone to violence between the Sunni and Shia sects in the holy month when the Shia community stages mourning processions.
