PESHAWAR, May 6: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to set up a separate prison for women and to take steps to avoid jailbreak incidents in future.

In a statement, the Provincial Home Department said the separate jail for women would cost approximately 400million rupees.

It added that the construction of high security jail in Mardan would be completed till the end of June at a cost of 1.70 billion rupees. The walls of the jail would be bomb and rocket-proof.

In addition, a high security jail is going to be constructed in Swabi and a central jail is being constructed in Peshawar.

The department also said it had started work to improve the security system of the jails in Nowshera, DI Khan, Upper Dir, Shangla, Tank and Malakand. Work on solar energy systems and clean drinking water plants would be completed at all the jails across the province soon.

In April 2012, about 400 inmates escaped when the Pakistani Taliban attacked the Bannu prison. In the DI Khan jailbreak, the Pakistani Taliban succeeded in releasing over 175 inmates in July last year.
