PESHAWAR, May 1: Various trade and labour unions held rallies and other events to mark the International Labour Day in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata.

A ceremony was held at the Peshawar Press Club, where Provincial Minister of Industries Shaukat Yousafzai was chief guest.

Mr Yousafzai told the gathering that the provincial government would increase the minimum wage of labourers up to 10,000 rupees a month.

Meanwhile, a ceremony was also held at the Municipal Corporation office in Mardan district. On the occasion, the Gandhara Arts Council presented a drama related to the efforts of working class.

The Labour Day is the commemoration of the May 4, 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago where the police fired shots to disperse a public assembly, killing four demonstrators. The demonstration had been staged for the eight-hour workday.
