LG elections

PESHAWAR, October 17: The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to conduct local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in March next year.

The Election Commission Secretary, Mr Ishtiaq Ahmed, stated this while talking to media after a meeting of the officials of Election Commission, National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) and provincial governments in the federal capital Islamabad yesterday.

He said it was not possible to hold elections in the provinces by 15 November as per the directives of Supreme Court because the arrangements may take up to five months.

He claimed that both the biometric system and ballot papers would be used in the elections. “Ballot papers will be ensured in the remote areas where the usage of electronic system isn’t possible,” he added.

At least five months are needed for proper arrangements to hold elections; three months are required for the installation of biometric system and minimum two months for the issuance of schedule of elections.

He further said that the elections in KP would be conducted as per the previously demarcated constituencies.

The LG elections have been held only in Balochistan till now while the other three provinces have been asked by the Supreme Court to hold the same by mid-November this year.
