School guard imprisoned for harassing girl in Chitral

PESHAWAR: A school guard was awarded two years rigorous imprisonment for attempted rape of 16-year- old girl in Chitral on Wednesday. The girl father has accused the man of sexually harassing his daughter, Tahira Bibi, due to which she had committed suicide, two years back.

The man was identified as Didar Ali, a resident of Mastuj, who has sexually harassed Tahira Bibi for a long time. She, as well as, her parents have also registered complained to the principle of the school but he was unable to stop him.  

At that time the girl was 16 to 17 years old. Then the family has also registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the guard at Mastuj police station. During this time, he was also suspended from his school duty, however, he has pleaded not guilty in the court.

An official of the school has testified in the court that she has come to him and told neither the court nor the government is taking any action against the accused and she was in great distress. The official informed that court he tried to console the girl that the case is still in the court and he will be punished for his crime.

He added he was informed that Tahira has come to school and refused to leave the school on August 6, 2016. The official revealed that when he came to school he found her body in the school where she had committed suicide.

The case was heard by a judicial magistrate in Booni, Sajid Ali Khan. After hearing the case, the judge sentenced Didar Ali to two years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 354 and six months under Section 506. The judge while announcing the judgment said that sentences will be served consecutively.

For the last couple of years, Chitral has been in the headlines for women suicides, however, so far, no solid reason was provided by the researchers and law enforcing agency working on the issue
