minister

PESHAWAR, November 21: The Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Zahid Hamid, has tendered resignation after his name was included in the charge sheet for high treason against former military ruler General (retired) Parvez Musharraf.

The former president Musharraf had been convicted for abrogating the Constitution and promulgating emergency on 3 November 2007.

The lawyer of ex-president appealed to the court to either repeal the case filed against Gen Musharraf or just hold former premier Mr Shaukat Aziz, the then law minister Mr Zahid Hamid and ex-chief justice Mr Abdul Hameed Dogar equally responsible for that.

Gen Musharraf had asked for including the names of around 600 army officials and politicians in the high treason case.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has declared Mr Shaukat Aziz, Mr Zahid Hamid and Abdul Hameed Dogar as accomplices of the former military dictator because they had written letter for the promulgation of emergency during the Musharraf regime.

On the other hand, Mr Zahid Hamid has resigned as minister for science and technology.

However, political analysts say that the apex court will call upon the culprits and record their statements before taking any decision.

Some have questioned as to how Mr Zahid Hamid had become a federal minister in Nawaz Sharif-led incumbent government as he had already served on a similar post in the Musharraf regime.
