The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has initiated the second phase of its campaign to block mobile phone SIM cards used illegally.
According to sources, a spokesperson for the PTA told the Associated Press of Pakistan that in this phase, SIMs registered on identity cards that expired before 2017 and have not been renewed will be deactivated.
The PTA spokesperson urged citizens to renew their ID cards to avoid having their mobile SIMs blocked. In the first phase, SIMs registered under fake or expired IDs were deactivated.

The third phase will involve blocking SIMs registered to individuals who have passed away.
The spokesperson further clarified that SIMs are being blocked based on data from NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) to curb the illegal use of SIMs, which are often exploited for tax fraud and other unlawful activities.
Additionally, users whose SIMs are set to be blocked will be notified in advance through a message.
