PESHAWAR, August 22: The Prime Minister, Mr Nawaz Sharif, has once again rejected the demand of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Mr Imran Khan to relinquish power and said that his resignation may lead to crisis in the country.
On 21 August, the prime minister told media that almost all the political parties were supporting him and that Pakistan is not in position to bear another downfall of democracy – an oblique reference to a martial law that may be imposed by the army in case situation in the country does not improve.
On the other hand, Mr Khan says he wants resolve issues through talks and that the government must take it seriously to fulfill their demands. He says the first of their demands is that the prime minister must resign.
Mr Khan said the opposition leader in the National Assembly Mr Khurshid Shah must be replaced by Mr Qamar Zaman Kaira in the negotiation committee, adding that there were petitions against Khursheed Shah in the National Accountability Bureau and that he was a supporter of Mr Sharif.
Yesterday the PTI stopped negotiations with the government because it said the government was planning to arrest party activists.
