PESHAWAR, April 24: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued show-cause notice to Geo News television channel for blaming a state institution.
Sources told TNN that the PEMRA had also formed a three-member committee after Federal Defence Minister Khwaja Asif filed a complaint against the TV channel. The PEMRA has asked the Geo News to submit reply by 6 May.
The committee has accused the media organisation of carrying out activities harming national interests. It said, “Certain reports smear the image of a state institution. However, the organisation will be given an opportunity to clarify its position.”
A few days ago, unidentified gunmen shot and injured senior Geo News anchor Hamid Mir in Karachi, prompting the television channel to launch a campaign for inquiry into the incident and arrest of the attackers. Some speakers in the TV programmes criticised the Inter-Services Intelligence, the country’s top spy agency, over the issue.
Later, the defence minister filed a complaint to the PEMRA, saying that the transmission of the Geo News must be banned.
