GHALLANAI, July 10: Residents of Mohmand Agency have complained of hike in prices of various commodities in the markets in the month of Ramazan.
The prices of commodities doubled in agency headquarters Ghallanai and other areas such as Yaka Ghund, and Mian Mandi.
Local residents say the inflation was witnessed in the markets even before the start of the holy month of Ramazan.
“The local administration must keep a check on the prices. In other countries, prices of food items plummet up to 50% on occasions of holy festivals, but the situation is the opposite here,” said a local tribesman, Mr Abdullah.
The traders, however, say they pay high transportation charges and taxes at checkposts while supplying fruit and vegetables to the tribal areas from Peshawar and other settled areas.
An official of the political administration said they had formed committees in all eight tehsils of the agency to stabilise the prices and that strict action would be taken against those overcharging consumers.
