A petition seeking suo motu notice of a controversial statement by Peshawar Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Mian Saeed has been filed with the Human Rights Cell of the Peshawar High Court.

The petition was submitted to the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court by social activist Hayat Roghani.

The petitioner said the CCPO’s remarks regarding extrajudicial actions had raised questions about the independence and credibility of the judiciary.

According to the petition, the CCPO had stated that the judiciary, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other institutions stood alongside the police in its operations.

The petitioner said the statement created an impression of endorsement of alleged extrajudicial actions.

The petition also referred to relevant records and videos and sought an explanation from the CCPO to protect public confidence and institutional transparency.

It urged the court to conduct an appropriate institutional review of the CCPO’s statement, stressing that an impartial judiciary is essential for upholding the rule of law and protecting fundamental human rights.
