ISLAMABAD, April 9, 2025 – In a powerful show of solidarity, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi have renewed their strategic partnership, calling for greater compassion and understanding for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

At an event held in Islamabad on Wednesday, both organizations urged that the plight of Afghan refugees be viewed through a humanitarian lens, emphasizing empathy and inclusion.

“Refugees have stories, hopes, and dreams—just like anyone else,” said Javed Afridi, Chairman of Peshawar Zalmi and the Zalmi Foundation. “Sport is a unifying force, and through our continued partnership with UNHCR, we aim to highlight the strength and resilience of displaced communities. We are proud to use our platform to inspire support and empathy.”

As PSL Season 10 kicks off, Peshawar Zalmi will continue to wear the UNHCR emblem on their official jerseys—an emblem of their commitment to refugee advocacy both on and off the field.

The extended agreement was formally announced by Peshawar Zalmi COO Mian Abbas Layaq and UNHCR Deputy Representative Ms. Fumiko Kashiwa, in the presence of Zalmi cricketers Hussain Talat and Najibullah Zadran, at Serena Hotel in Islamabad.

“Sports have the power to bring people together,” said Ms. Kashiwa. “Through our collaboration with Peshawar Zalmi, we hope to build a platform where refugees are not only seen and heard, but recognized for their potential. Together, we can inspire communities to welcome and embrace displaced individuals as valuable members of society.”
