PESHAWAR, May 23: The Peshawar High Court on Thursday set aside capital punishment of Malik Jehangir, former husband of prominent Pashto singer Ghazala Javed, after compromise between the aggrieved family and the accused.

The court observed that the heirs of the deceased, Ms Ghazala Javed and her father Ms Javed Khan, had pardoned the appellant Mr Jehangir.

Ghazala Javed and her father were shot dead in Dabgari locality of the provincial capital Peshawar two years ago and later Jehangir was arrested in the case.

The appellant was convicted by a court in Swat on December 16 last year in the double murder case and was sentenced to death on two counts with a fine of Rs71 million rupees and 10 years rigorous imprisonment.

He filed an appeal in the Peshawar High Court and also started efforts to reach compromise with the bereaved family.

TNN correspondent says that Jehangir had paid 8 million rupees ‘Diyat’ to the aggrieved family. Diyat means the compensation granted to the heirs of the victim by an offender.
