Islamabad: Fifteen newborn babies were killed in a devastating fire that broke out in the nursery of PIMS Hospital, while one baby was rescued safely.

According to rescue officials, the fire broke out in the nursery located on the third floor of the MCH Ward at PIMS Hospital. Rescue teams immediately reached the scene and brought the fire under control, while cooling operations are still underway.

Rescue sources said the preliminary cause of the fire was believed to be an explosion in the air conditioner’s compressor.

Hospital officials said 16 newborns were present in the nursery when the fire broke out. A lady doctor safely rescued one baby, while 15 newborns lost their lives. According to the district administration, 14 of the babies were completely burned.

Rescue officials said six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances took part in the rescue operation.

A committee headed by the Additional Deputy Commissioner has been formed to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep grief and sorrow over the fire at the PIMS Hospital nursery.

The prime minister took notice of the incident and ordered an immediate investigation. He said the incident involving the newborns was an irreparable tragedy. He directed authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances, identify those responsible, and take strict action against anyone found negligent.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said his heart was deeply saddened by the tragic incident and expressed solidarity with the grieving parents.
