KOHISTAN, June 25: The Pakistani Prime Minister, Mr Nawaz Sharif, has laid the foundation stone for the Dasu power project, which will generate 4,320 megawatts electricity.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr Sharif said the project would help resolve the energy crisis in Pakistan.

He said hydel resources would be utilised to overcome the electricity crisis. Work on the Diamer-Bhasha dam would also begin soon, he added.

The World Bank has agreed to provide assistance worth 1 billion dollars for the project, which is expected to be completed in two phases. The first phase will be completed in five years and will add 2,160MW electricity to the national grid.

The premier also said an additional 40,000 megawatts of electricity could be generated from new power projects on the River Indus.

The project, located on the Karakoram Highway, will be constructed on the River Indus and it is about seven kilometres upstream of Dasu village and 74km downstream of Diamer-Bhasha Dam.
