polio epidemic

PESHAWAR, October 23: The number of polio cases has increased up to 217 in Pakistan this year after five more children fell victims to the disease.

The National Institute of Health (NIH) says verified two children from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, two from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and a child from Karachi are latest victims of the disease.

Around 217 cases of poliovirus have been registered in Pakistan in 2014 so far. About 143 of the total cases have surfaced from the tribal region and 45 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said Pakistan is responsible for 80% of polio cases in the world.

Due to increasing polio cases, all Pakistanis have been asked to produce polio vaccination certificates before travelling abroad.
