DI KHAN, May 3: Relatives of the people, who fell victims to toxic refuse from sugar mills in the district, have damaged the buildings of factories during protest demonstrations.
Nine people were killed after they fell into a drain carrying poisonous waste material from sugar mills. Initially, a minor girl had slipped into a drain and other people who tried to rescue her also lost their lives after falling into the drain.
“A single factory ruined several families. Why is the government silent over this issue?” said a local resident while talking to TNN.
Another resident said, “Several women have become widows and children orphans. The government must announce adequate compensation for these families and take action against the factory owners.”
The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. The police have also arrested seven members of the mill management.
