Rising Violence in Southern KP: Former Police Inspector and Companion Killed in Karak

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district, unidentified assailants opened fire in Banda Daud Shah tehsil, killing former police inspector Gul Shadi Khan and his companion Dilawar Khan.

According to the police, the incident occurred near Hospital Bridge within Banda police station’s jurisdiction, where gunmen targeted a vehicle, resulting in the death of both men. DSP Banda Daud Shah, and Javed Khan, stated that the motive behind the attack is being investigated, and efforts are underway to trace the culprits. Both victims hailed from the Bahadur Khel area.

The law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in the southern districts, has been increasingly precarious over the past year. Attacks on law enforcement personnel and civilians have become disturbingly frequent.

On January 9, militants abducted 16 employees of the Atomic Energy Mine Project in Kabool Khel, Lakki Marwat, setting their vehicle on fire. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the incident, although eight workers were safely recovered the next day.

Earlier, on January 3, a police constable was killed in a targeted shooting on Miranshah Road in Bannu’s Cantonment area. The deceased officer, identified as Kamran, belonged to Hadri Mammad Khel.

Additionally, on December 31, 2024, militants attempted to blow up a police mobile van in Bannu’s Cantonment area using an improvised explosive device (IED). The explosion injured six police personnel, including a sub-inspector, and two bystanders. The incident occurred during a routine patrol near the Sorangi Adda area, where the IED was hidden in a garbage heap and detonated as the vehicle passed by.

In Kot Laloo, within the jurisdiction of Daraban Police Station in Dera Ismail Khan, over 40 armed militants stormed the residence of Frontier Corps (FC) personnel and set their belongings ablaze.

According to the police, the affected family members include Sher Akbar (FC Darazinda Fort), Nooruddin (FC), Akbar Zaman (Balochistan FC), and Syed Akbar (Pakistan Army), all sons of Mir Zaman Khan and members of the Sherani tribe.

At the time of the attack, the security personnel were on duty, leaving only women and children at home. Fortunately, there were no casualties; however, household items were completely destroyed in the fire.

Police reached the site and initiated an investigation. Meanwhile, locals and the affected family strongly condemned the incident, demanding compensation for their losses and the immediate arrest of those responsible.
