Around the world, people adjust their diets according to the weather, but this practice is often overlooked in eastern countries, especially in Pakistan. Despite scorching temperatures, Pakistanis frequently consume hot foods even during the summer.

Experts suggest that adapting one's diet and lifestyle to the weather can significantly mitigate the negative effects of seasonal changes on health. Aimal Khan, a nutritionist at Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar, emphasizes the importance of seasonal dietary changes. "Adapting your diet according to the season can have numerous health benefits," Khan advises. "It’s crucial to be mindful of what to eat and what to avoid, particularly in the summer, to reduce the severity of the weather and prevent seasonal illnesses."

Khan points out that people in hot cities like Peshawar must adjust their diets to the season. "Adjusting your diet based on the seasons provides the body with a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals," he explains. "Seasonal produce is often fresher and more flavorful. Fruits and vegetables grown in their natural season face minimal human intervention, making them healthier options."

Currently, with the intense summer heat, staying hydrated is paramount. Khan recommends consuming foods with high water content such as fresh vegetables, watermelon, apples, cucumbers, and tomatoes. "Melons and berries, known as superhydrates, maintain the water balance in our bodies due to their high water content," Khan notes. "Additionally, red-colored fruits and vegetables, rich in lycopene, antioxidants, and flavonoids, protect the skin from sun damage and enhance blood circulation."

He advises drinking more water and incorporating salads and fresh, seasonal fruits into daily meals to combat the heat and prevent diseases. Certain foods, however, should be avoided. "Spicy foods, pickles, and oily fried items should be significantly reduced," Khan warns. "These foods decrease the body's water content, leading to summer ailments like heartburn, upset stomach, and nausea."

Moreover, Khan highlights the importance of avoiding certain beverages during summer. "Coffee, tea, and caffeinated drinks should be minimized as caffeine causes dehydration," he says. "Instead, opt for lassi or lemon water. Lassi is rich in protein, while lemon water helps balance the body's electrolytes."

In conclusion, Khan emphasizes the benefits of seasonal eating. "Remember, eating seasonally is advantageous. Prioritize your health by staying hydrated and enjoying the delicious flavors of summer. This practice can significantly reduce body heat and keep you healthy throughout the season."
