BISHAM, April 27: People staged protest in Shangla district and warned to besiege the Khan Khwar dam on 1 May if the government did not begin supplying electricity to their areas from the local hydropower project.

The demonstrators said that earlier they had given the 26 April deadline to WAPDA, the national electric company, to start power supply to them from the dam but that their demand was not heeded.

They also warned of closing the main market in district headquarters Bisham on 1 May in protest.

A local elder told TNN, “The electricity of Khan Khwar dam must be provided to us; it is producing 72 megawatts electricity here. I think just four to five megawatts electricity is enough for entire Shangla district. We are demanding this because this is our right.”

However, Shangla’s Assistant Commissioner Habibullah Wazir said that he had forwarded the demands of local residents to the authorities and that the problem would be solved soon.
