The clashes between two tribes in Kurram District over a land dispute have now entered their sixth day, resulting in 44 fatalities and 176 injuries.

Despite the efforts of the district administration, military leadership, police, and tribal elders to establish a ceasefire in the village of Bushara just a day ago, the fighting has reignited. The ceasefire agreement had led to the clearing of trenches by both parties, but sources report that the factions violated the truce at night, resorting to the use of automatic weapons against each other.

Background

The conflict initially erupted over a property dispute between the two tribes in areas like Boshehra and Mali Khel, with the violence quickly spreading to Piwar, Tangi, Balish Khel, Haar kaly, Maqbal, Kunj Ali Zai, and Para Chamkani Karman. This has resulted in continuous gunfire and heavy weaponry usage, severely affecting the local population.

In the previous days, the ongoing conflict saw an escalation, with 15 people killed and 70 injured by the fourth day of fighting. Efforts for a ceasefire were made by a peace jirga from Hangu and Orakzai, engaging in negotiations with the elders of both parties, but these attempts failed to hold.

Current Situation

The current situation remains highly tense, with the main Parachinar highway closed to all traffic, further compounding the difficulties faced by residents. Both Parachinar City and Sadda Bazaar have been targeted with missiles and rockets, highlighting the severe impact of the conflict on civilian life.

Efforts continue to broker peace and establish a lasting ceasefire, but the violation of the truce indicates a challenging path ahead. The ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for effective mediation and resolution to prevent further loss of life and injuries.
