CHARSADDA, May 12: A 14-year-old girl, who had been given as Swara, was recovered by the police in Charsadda district and five of her family members including her mother were also arrested.
Swara is an old custom among Pakhtuns but now the government has banned it. Swara is a girl who is usually given in marriage to someone in order to resolve a dispute.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran told TNN, “When I reached Buji Pul, I heard the screams of a girl in a pickup. I flagged down the vehicle and asked all the people to alight. The girl crying for help told me that she had been given as Swara and the people were taking her to Afghanistan.”
The mother of the girl said their family had killed a member of the other family 19 years ago and now they decided to give their daughter to settle that dispute.
