PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government following the federal government’s announcement has announced closure of all educational institutions from today (Thursday), but only for students.

Teachers of all the educational institutions have been directed to ensure their prescience on duty for online classes and giving students homework.

According to a notification issued by the KP Elementary and Secondary Education Department, the educational institutions will be closed for students from November 26 till January 10, 2021. From November 26 to December 23, teachers will continue to work from schools and provide online lessons or weekly assignments. The winter vacations will start from December 24 and end on January 10, 2021. The notification said that schools, academies, seminaries, and other educational institutions that cannot adopt e-learning are “authorised to call in students on grade basis in such a way that one grade students are called for attendance for only one day in a week and that too as per staggered schedule for giving homework, assignment and distributing learning material and providing teaching assistance.

All the internal school exams, which were previously scheduled to be held in December, have been postponed till January 2021.

The institutions management shall ensure strict adherence to the already issued COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the staff, students and all those who work or are present in any capacity within the premises of educational institutions. All the teacher training and recruitment programs shall continue as per previous schedule under the strict SOPs.

Enforcement of these instructions will continue to be assessed in the context of the prevailing COVID-19 situation and will be subject to review in consultation with the National Command and Control Centre (NCOC).

Meanwhile, Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education said at a press conference that home-based learning will be encouraged till the time the schools are closed. He said schoolchildren will come to school only once a week for homework.

He said this arrangement will be applicable to all the government and private schools, especially for those educational institutions where there is no online education facility.

The minister said schools have also been allowed to keep maximum 30 percent students in hostels. This facility will be available for those students who cannot go homes which are situated in far off areas.
