MIRANSHAH, April 26: Two new cases of polio have emerged in North Waziristan tribal region.

According to a report of the National Institute of Health Islamabad, 18-month old Rabia and 4-year-old Shah Qadar Meend, residents of agency headquarters Miranshah, have been affected by polio and neither of them has received polio vaccine so far.

The Taliban have banned anti-polio vaccination campaigns in the tribal region for the last several years.

Pakistan has reported 52 cases of polio this year, including 36 from North Waziristan Agency alone.

The World Health Organisation says in a report that Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are polio-endemic countries while most parts of the world have been cleared of the virus.
