
PESHAWAR, October 17: The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said Pakistan is responsible for 80% polio cases in the world.
“This is because the polio vaccination teams cannot access children in many areas of Pakistan,” says the WHO in a report.
Militants in Pakistan have been resisting the anti-polio efforts because they consider polio vaccines a conspiracy and regularly attack polio workers to discourage anti-polio campaigns, it adds.
About 207 polio cases have been reported this year in the country, and the figure had broken records of the past 14 years.
The WHO has confirmed that out of all the reports, 43 polio cases are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 136 from FATA region.
The Taliban have banned polio vaccination in Waziristan and other tribal regions for the last several years and polio teams cannot access children in those areas for.
