PESHWAR, October 28: Two more children have been diagnosed with polio in Peshawar and Khyber Agency, raising the total number of cases to 222 in Pakistan this year.
The National Institute of Health (NIH) has verified two children with the poliovirus, 10-month-old Faheemullah from Sheikh Muhammadi area in Peshawar and 10-month-old Saima from Tirah Valley, Khyber Agency.
A global organisation monitoring the polio-hit countries, Independent Monitoring Board (IMB), has declared Pakistan’s campaign against polio elimination to be a complete failure. It has directed the United Nations (UN) to increase restrictions on those Pakistanis who travel abroad.
Previously, the IMB had advised Pakistan to assign the polio eradication programme to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which was refused by the government.
The World Health Organisation has already directed authorities that each Pakistani travelling abroad must produce a polio vaccination certificate before embarking on journey.
