The Peshawar High Court has issued notices to the federal government and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), seeking responses to a petition challenging the deportation of a Pakistani citizen, Kamran, who is suffering from a mental illness, to Afghanistan.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmad and Justice Farah Jamshed heard the petition.

The petitioner’s lawyer told the court that Kamran, a resident of Landi Arbab, was arrested by police without justification. He said Kamran suffers from a mental illness and had previously received treatment at a private hospital in Peshawar.

According to the lawyer, although Kamran is listed as a Pakistani citizen in NADRA’s records, he was included in the repatriation programme and deported to Afghanistan through the Torkham border on July 20.

The court was informed that after reaching Afghanistan, Kamran contacted his family. The petition requested that diplomatic efforts be made to bring him back to Pakistan.

The petitioner’s lawyer also requested an inquiry against government officials responsible for negligence in sending Kamran to Afghanistan.

The court sought responses from the federal government and NADRA and adjourned further proceedings until October 26.
