Despite the proclamation of an educational emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, government neglect has left 6,337 public schools across 13 districts without basic amenities. According to a recent report, these schools lack electricity, clean drinking water, toilets, and boundary walls.
In the 13 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2,211 schools are without electricity. Furthermore, 1,057 schools lack access to clean drinking water, and 1,253 schools do not have toilet facilities.
Additionally, 1,816 schools do not have boundary walls, posing a risk for potential unpleasant incidents. Specific districts facing severe shortages include Lower Kohistan with 184 schools lacking electricity; Malakand with 5, Mansehra with 344, Mardan with 15, Nowshera with 9, Peshawar with 19, Shangla with 154, Swabi with 7, Swat with 66, Tank with 32, Torghar with 24, Upper Chitral with 42, and Upper Kohistan with 252 schools still awaiting electricity.

Similarly, 117 schools in Lower Kohistan lack clean drinking water; Malakand has 3, Mansehra has 81, Mardan has 2, Nowshera has 9, Peshawar has 14, Shangla has 29, Swabi has 7, Swat has 10, Tank has 6, Torghar has 9, Upper Chitral has 26, and Upper Kohistan has 208 schools without clean drinking water.
The report also highlights that 158 schools in Lower Kohistan are without toilet facilities; Malakand has 7, Mansehra has 173, Mardan has 6, Nowshera has 3, Peshawar has 15, Shangla has 45, Swabi has 4, Swat has 24, Tank has 15, Torghar has 38, Upper Chitral has 16, and Upper Kohistan has 194 schools lacking toilets.
Moreover, 155 schools in Lower Kohistan do not have boundary walls; Malakand has 15, Mansehra has 316, Mardan has 14, Nowshera has 5, Peshawar has 7, Shangla has 118, Swabi has 36, Swat has 58, Tank has 12, Torghar has 55, Upper Chitral has 40, and Upper Kohistan has 125 schools without boundary walls.
Attempts to get a comment from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Minister of Education, Faisal Turkai, were unsuccessful as he declined to comment on the situation.
