Cupping, known as "hijama" in Arabic, is an ancient practice that has been used for over 5,000 years. While the basic principle has remained the same, the cups and techniques have evolved over the centuries.
Cupping involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, which is believed to help with detoxification by drawing out toxins and promoting blood flow. Although cupping has long been a part of traditional medicine, it has recently gained recognition in modern times for its potential health benefits.
The suction created by cupping is thought to stimulate blood flow, relieve muscle tension, and promote healing. It is often used to help with pain relief, inflammation, relaxation, and overall well-being. Cupping is now being embraced by many individuals seeking alternative or complementary therapies for various health conditions.
Hijama also holds significant importance in Islam as it is a practice that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended and practiced. It is believed to have both physical and spiritual benefits in Islamic tradition.
Authentic Narrations About Hijama - Cupping Therapy
In Hadith Number 5680 in Bukhari, narrated by Ibn Abbas (R.A), the Prophet (SAWS) said, "There is healing in three things: a gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire. But the Prophet (SAWS) forbade us from using branding with fire."
Many hadiths prove the benefits of this treatment. In the collections of Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet (PBUH) called it the best remedy and encouraged his Ummah to do the same.

The 17th, 19th, and 21st dates of the Islamic month are declared the best for performing hijama because, during these days, blood circulation is moderate, allowing the body to benefit most. However, hijama can be performed whenever needed, as noted by Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, who said he would always seek it when necessary.
According to the tradition of Tirmidhi Sharif:
"Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
'The days on which you perform hijama are the seventeenth, nineteenth, and twenty-first days of the lunar month.'"
Growing Popularity and Precautions
Cupping is gaining popularity for its positive results. However, it is essential to be cautious about the risks associated with unsterilized equipment. Using unclean cups can lead to infections and other health issues.
When considering cupping, ensure that the cups and equipment used are properly sterilized to prevent any potential infections. It is crucial to seek out trained and reputable practitioners who follow strict hygiene protocols to minimize risks.
