Pakistan’s national space agency, SUPARCO, has announced the official name of the country’s first lunar rover. More than 4,000 names were submitted from across the country for the naming competition.

According to SUPARCO, the lunar rover has been named “Jinnah-1.” The name was suggested by seven people, and the winner was selected through a lucky draw.

Seventeen-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar won the draw and was declared the winner for proposing the name “Jinnah-1.”

According to the SUPARCO chairman, the name pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and also symbolizes Pakistan’s progress in space research.

Pakistan’s first lunar rover will be sent to the Moon in 2029 aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, where it will conduct scientific research near the lunar south pole.
