The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to completely separate the police investigation and operations wings. As part of this move, amendments to the Police Act will grant the Investigation Wing administrative and financial autonomy.

According to the Home Department, the Investigation Wing will have a separate chain of command from the level of the Additional Inspector General (AIG) down to the district level. Independent investigation structures will also be established at the district, regional, and provincial levels.

The department said these reforms are aimed at improving transparency and strengthening the criminal justice system. The measures are intended to address the issue of low conviction rates caused by weak investigations.

Provincial Law Minister Barrister Aftab Alam said the government is also taking steps to make the prosecution system stronger and more accountable. Responsibility will be fixed in cases of poor prosecutorial performance.

He added that the police Investigation Wing will be granted complete administrative independence from the Operations Wing, along with financial and administrative autonomy. The draft amendments to the Police Act will soon be finalized.

Barrister Aftab Alam said the reforms will focus on ensuring that offenders receive appropriate punishment. He expressed hope that the measures would help prevent crime, improve the delivery of justice to the public, and reduce the acquittal rate of accused persons.
