President Asif Ali Zardari has congratulated the nation on the 79th Independence Day, saying that greater focus on national development and the country’s internal affairs is needed to make Pakistan stronger, safer and more prosperous.

He said that independence was not only a historic achievement but also a responsibility. August 14 reminds the nation of the sacrifices that led to the creation of Pakistan. The president paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leaders and workers of the independence movement, and all those who made sacrifices for the country.

Asif Ali Zardari said that the recent “Battle of Truth” had demonstrated that Pakistan seeks peace but also has the capability to defend its sovereignty. He said that major sacrifices had been made to ensure peace and stability in the country, while the armed forces, police and law-enforcement agencies had played an important role in protecting the nation.

Regarding Afghanistan, the president said Pakistan had always respected and supported Afghan sovereignty. However, he termed the use of Afghan soil for terrorist attacks and cooperation by the Afghan Taliban rulers in terrorism against Pakistan regrettable. He called for an end to hostile activities against the Pakistani people.

President Zardari said that disputes must ultimately be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. Pakistan’s security is linked to peace and stability in the region and the world, which is why efforts to create a conducive environment for reducing tensions would continue.

He said there was a need to strengthen the national economy, create opportunities for young people, and improve education and skills development. He urged all Pakistanis to play their role in the country’s progress.

The president prayed that Allah Almighty would protect Pakistan and grant its people peace and prosperity.
