A petition has been filed in the Peshawar High Court seeking the body of proclaimed offender Mumtaz alias Mumtazay, who was allegedly killed in a police encounter.

The petition was filed by Mumtaz’s mother, who claimed that her son was brought back to Pakistan from Bahrain and killed in a fake police encounter, while the family has not been handed over his body.

According to the petition, police officials are telling the family that the body will not be handed over until a petition filed before the Peshawar High Court seeking protection for Mumtaz’s life is withdrawn.

The petitioner has requested the court to order the police to hand over Mumtaz’s body to his family.

According to police, Mumtaz alias Mumtazay was a proclaimed offender wanted by Peshawar police in 49 serious cases. He was brought back to Pakistan from Bahrain through Islamabad Airport following an Interpol operation, under the supervision of DSP Ijaz Nabi and DSP Ashfaq.

Police said the team bringing Mumtaz to Peshawar came under attack on the Northern Bypass within the jurisdiction of Shahpur Police Station. The attackers opened fire and hurled hand grenades, injuring two SHOs.

According to police, Mumtaz alias Mumtazay was also killed in the attack, while two attackers were killed in retaliatory fire by the police.
