Despite the Peshawar district administration’s recent announcement setting the weight of a standard roti at 140 grams and reducing its price, the decision remains confined to paper, leaving citizens with no choice but to purchase underweight bread at inflated prices.
Residents report that in areas such as General Bus Stand, Namak Mandi, Khyber Bazaar, and Hospital Road, tandoors and hotels continue to sell rotis weighing just 100 to 120 grams for Rs. 20. Even though the administration has banned the sale of double roti in hotels, the practice persists unchecked.
A local from Saddar expressed frustration, saying that despite multiple efforts by the administration and a drop in flour prices, neither the weight of the roti has improved nor has its price decreased. He added that citizens are growing increasingly anxious as naanbais openly overcharge with no visible action from the food department or district officials.

Concerned residents have called on the administration to ensure immediate enforcement of the fixed weight and price of roti and to take strict action against violators so that some relief may be provided to the public.
It is worth noting that last week, the Peshawar district administration issued a notification mandating an increase in roti weight—from 140 to 150 grams—for Rs. 20 following a drop in flour prices. The order also required naanbais to keep digital scales in their shops to ensure accuracy. However, the implementation of this directive remains nowhere in sight.
