Police have made a major breakthrough in the gang rape case of a 15-year-old girl in Badhber, arresting three suspects allegedly involved in the crime one month ago.

The arrested men have been identified as Atif, 20, Ibrar, 18, and Ahmad, 15, according to police sources. All three were produced before a Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday. Police requested a 10-day physical remand, but the court granted a one-day physical remand instead.

According to police, the suspects sexually assaulted the girl about a month ago while she was on her way home from madrassa.

In a disturbing development, police also arrested members of a jirga who tried to settle the matter. Police sources said the jirga elders had decided that the victim would marry one of the accused to “resolve” the case.

When the girl’s father refused to accept the jirga’s decision, he filed a complaint at the local police station five days ago.

The victim’s medical report is still pending, police said.
